Decision analysis

The primary focus of our research and professional services is decision analysis methods. Decision analysis is an interdisciplinary scientific field that includes aspects of economics and administrative science, psychology and mathematics.

Our methods combine analytic and interactive elements to make strategic decision-making processes both more efficient and more effective. Drawing on the experience and know-how of experts from different fields produces decisions that are well founded and transparent, with the effect that strategic decisions are more likely to gain the acceptance of employees and key interest groups.

This approach allows resources to be used more efficiently, increasing value for money by an average of 20 to 30 percent. For over thirty years, it has been successfully applied all over the world by the experts at the London School of Economics, particularly in the following areas:

  • Project appraisal (e.g., in the assessment of funding proposals, the analysis of oil and gas investments, and in selecting R&D projects)
  • Strategic resource allocation (e.g., in devising prioritization models for national health services, defense ministries, and trade departments; in strategic marketing budgeting, and in developing HR strategies)
  • Product planning & development (e.g., in assessing strategies for increasing customer loyalty)
  • Budgeting & planning (e.g., in strategic urban planning)
  • Analyzing invitations to tender (e.g., in the evaluation of project proposals)
  • Site selection (e.g., for the disposal of nuclear waste)
  • Strategy assessment (e.g., in the appraisal of climate change policies)
  • Choosing technologies (e.g., analyzing different options for disposing of hazardous waste)
  • Negotiations (e.g., collective bargaining)
  • Optimizing R&D portfolios (e.g., in the assessment and strategic prioritization of R&D options in the pharmaceutical industry)
  • Public procurement (e.g., in the purchase of equipment for national security and defense departments)
